Commitment to Excellence

Hello Lanier Families and Friends,
If you are a first year parent and student, welcome to the best middle school in the Houston Independent School District If you are a returning student or parent, welcome back. You know Lanier Middle School is a special place!

The 2008-2009 academic year promises to be one of the best Lanier has ever had for several reasons.  Our new principal, William (Bill) Shell, is committed to developing the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (“MYP”).  Lanier is the only HISD middle school with the MYP designation.  MYP is designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in our ever-changing world. Mr. Shell has also stated he and his staff are committed and working hard to raise the school to “Exemplary” status.  The PTO‘s Commitment to Excellence Campaign will work to ensure Lanier Middle School has the financial resources needed to meet these goals.

The Commitment To Excellence Campaign is Lanier’s major fundraiser; it is a request for capital underwriting. All money raised goes to programs and purchases that directly benefit the Lanier students, faculty, and staff to help Lanier go above and beyond the basics budgeted by HISD for our children’s education. The areas to benefit this year are:

§       Additional technology updates

§       Improvement of parent communication – Communication between parent and teacher is critical to student success.  This year we will further develop email and web communication, and use funds to increase the ability of all our parents to participate in school activities.

§       Curriculum support, enrichment and supplies to enhance the classroom – We provide teachers with special and/or additional training and teaching materials

§       Athletic field renovations - The athletic field is in poor shape, badly in need of renovation. The PTO is partnering with the Lanier Middle School Foundation to raise the remaining funds to make improvements including installation of a walking/ jogging trail, drainage, a scoreboard, and a sprinkler system.  Improvements to our green space will enhance Lanier students’ physical, social and emotional health and intelligence—key aspects of development leading to complete and healthy lives.

We ask that you please consider a donation to the 2008-2009 Commitment to Excellence Campaign. This year, Encore Bank has agreed to be our campaign kickoff sponsor with a donation of $2,500.  The Lanier Middle School PTO is a 501(c)(3) organization; so your donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.  You can make your donation on the “Paws and Purchase” form found either at the Back to School Celebration or in your student’s First Day Packet, or by downloading a form from www.lanierpto.org.  Also, please check the Matching Funds list to determine if your company has a matching policy.

On behalf of our children, and Lanier’s faculty and administrators, we thank you for your past and future support to Lanier Middle School through the PTO’s Commitment to Excellence campaign!

Sincerely,
