Lanier Fun Fact
In 1935, students from Lanier created a petition to rename Woodhead Street, to Higginbotham Street, after the principal, Blanch Higginbotham. According to Lanier student's other schools used "Wood head" as a derogatory label for Lanier students, implying that they lacked intelligence. But after hearing testimony about John Woodhead's character (the person the street was named after), the Houston City Council decided to keep the Woodhead street name.
Lanier Spotlight
This week let's shine a spotlight on 2 amazing Student Support Clerks. These ladies are super busy and always helping. Make sure to thank them for all their hard work and dedication next time you see them.
Ms. McNeill
Ms. McNeill is a Student Support Clerk here at Lanier. She has been with the school for 1 year but has been a proud purple pup parent for 3 years. Her many tasks include but are not limited to; record requests related to program applications, school submission, credit appeals and of course assisting the administration team as well. She is a first generation Mexican American. She is a native Houstonian. She attended Hogg Middle School, Lamar High School and the University of Houston Downtown. She has a major in Spanish and minor in sociology. Ms. McNeill has worked for HISD since the age of 19 as a student teacher. She has a son in 8th grade and a daughter in 1st grade. She enjoys spending time with her family, walking her 2 doodle dogs, and traveling. Thank you, Ms. McNeill, for everything you do at Lanier.
Ms. Hernandez
Ms. Hernandez has been with Lanier for 3 years. She is a Student Support Clerk and under that title falls many daily tasks. Just a few of the items she takes care of are scheduling and imputing discipline, lunch detention, attendance, Chromebook and ID card assistant, dress code violations and tardy's. She also works with LPAC (English as a second language) to do testing and other work. And let's not forget she is also the assistant to all Lanier's vice principals. If she is not in her office, you can find her moving about the school and helping were needed. In her spare time, besides getting some much-needed rest, she enjoys her pets. She has 2 love birds and 3 dogs. She especially enjoys running with the dogs. Ms. Hernandez is also a very proud mother to a lovely 11th grade daughter. Thank you, Ms. Hernandez, for all of your hard work.
What's Going on in the Halls?
This week let's take a look at what the Mandarin Chinese Class is up to. Beautiful work indeed.
Learning History and Having Fun
8th graders have been busy learning about the American Revolutionary War. Our amazing team of History teachers have gone above and beyond to make history fun. Not only have they dressed as the King of England, laid out a Boston Massacre activity in the library and played a joke on the kids telling them they all had to start paying for copies (it all worked into the lesson), now they are having a tug of war!!! The British against the colonist. Did the French join in? Do you remember your history lessons? The kids loved it and had so much fun. These history lessons will stick with our students for years to come.
Pictured left to right Brain Gusterson (student teacher), Ms. Humble, Ms. Vaclavik, Mr. Loften (AP who needed to see this teaching in action), Ms. Sandoval and Allie Guerra (student teacher). A big thank you for making learning so fun this year.
Thanks Dad's Club
Huge shout out to the Dad's Club for cleaning up around campus. There is always a list. Thanks for all you do!!!
Lanier Students Give Back at Houston Nature Discovery Center
This past Sunday Everette Schmidt, Lucas Gates, Maddox Gould-Marks and Luke Hubbard proudly represented Lanier in a meaningful community give-back initiative at the Houston Nature Discovery Center. With shovels in hand and high spirits in tow, the boys tackled the tough task of removing non-native tree roots - a physically demanding effort that will pave the way for planting more native trees and restoring ecological balance in the area. Their dedication and teamwork yielded amazing results, making a real impact on the local environment. Their hard work and positive energy exemplify the values of stewardship and service, and we are proud to celebrate their contribution to a greener Houston. Maddox, Lucas and Everette are in the leadership program while all four of the boys are in NJHS. This was also a part of their Eagle Project.
Way to go Lanier Team!!!!
Who's Excited About Homecoming??!!
Remember this coming Tuesday, October 21st, is Lanier's Homecoming Football Game. Let's all go out and support our football boys. In addition, the band will be playing and the cheerleaders cheering. It's a great way to support so many of our students, socialize with Lanier parents and honestly have a great time.
We are pleased to share the 2025-2026 Lanier MS student and family handbook. This handbook serves to provide a normed resource for all Lanier MS stakeholders to reference for answers and information about some of the most common, but essential questions and areas of interest. While this is not an exhaustive document nor does it supersede HISD board policy, state, and federal education laws we hope you find it helpful and informative as you navigate your journey as a Purple Pup.
Lanier now has its very own textile recycling bin!
Green City Recycler is dedicated to keeping textiles out of landfills and giving them a second life.
Here’s how it works: For every pound of textiles donated by the Lanier community, the school earns 10 cents. That may not sound like much, but those small amounts really add up!
So, if you have any textiles (clothes, shoes, linens, etc.) that aren’t in good enough condition to donate elsewhere, don’t toss them, recycle them in the bin! Every item helps the environment and supports our school.
Bin location: Next to the bus entrance on Harold Street.
The safety of our students is very important to Lanier Middle School. Please review the drop-off and pick-up map carefully to assist us in assuring that this process runs smoothly. Please be patient, considerate, and careful. Your child’s safety and the safety of all of our children are at stake. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Please consider donating something from our wonderful teachers Amazon wishlists.
As always tissues and pencils are greatly appreciated too. You can drop them off at the front desk with the cluster and/or teacher you are giving them to.
Please note that the cutoff time for dropping off lunch to your students is 10:00am.
No Uber eats orders (or other food delivery services) will be accepted for students.
Please also note that the cutoff time for early pick up of students is 3:30pm. If you arrive past this time you will need to wait until official dismissal at 4:00pm to collect your student.
